KOVAR

What is Kovar?

KOVAR stands for the Knights of Virginia Assisting Citizens with Mental Retardation. Throughout the state of Virginia, the Knights of Columbus support our citizens, including aid for equipment, transportation, and furnishing investments, as well as providing low-interest loans that support the construction of group homes. Since its inception in 1971 KOVAR has provided over $10,000,000 in assistance to our citizens. For more information on how KOVAR operates, please see our state KOVAR web site.

Council Support

The Council supports the KOVAR effort primarily with the annual Tootsie Roll Drive, held in mid-April. Tootsie Rolls are handed out to customers entering various establishments during that time, and brochures are offered which explain KOVAR. Donations are gratefully accepted. In each of the past three years, over $4000 has been collected by the Father Rowen Council. It is important to note that 100% of all donations received during the KOVAR drive are made available for funding grants. The costs of all overhead expenses (including the Tootsie Rolls) is absorbed by the council. Additionally, the council members donate their own time to the local organizations as needed.

This year, our KOVAR fund drive will be from Thursday, April 16 through Sunday, April 19. Please help us with your support in 2009!
