Deputy Grand Knight Report – John Chiumento
The DGK stated that for the
last three meetings, he had a request from the Church of the Incarnation to provide funds in the amount of $390.29,
for purchase of picture frames to be presented as a memento to the First
Communion Class. Because of a lack of a quorum, no action could be taken. So,
he presented it to the council in the form of a motion to get it enacted upon
at the next valid business.
Chancellor’s Report – Tom O’Rourke
We have a catalog of Knights
of Columbus materials. If you want to get any items, we should pool our
requests since we can split the shipping charges and reduce our costs.
The Walk for Life 2008 for The Pregnancy Centers of Central Virginia is scheduled for Saturday, April 12 at 9:00 AM at the Student Activities Building, UVA. See your local Church bulletin for more information.
Attended the funeral of
Debra Dickinson, wife of Lew Stokes. Although both were blind, they were an
inspiration to many because of their faith in God. As many as 26 of the 30 or
so attendants, spoke of her impact on their lives.
Thanks to the Financial
Secretary, we now have a funeral kit and instructions. Five members will say
the Rosary. A Certificate of Condolence will be presented to the widow. If you
are the lead at the funeral, the kits are available. See the Warden, he has the
materials.
We have an Award for “Citizenship
of the Year” to be presented to Collette Hall, wife of Brother Kelton Flinn.
However, we have to wait for an auspicious occasion to make the presentation.
Are we getting our fair share of the money that we work hard for at the Wild Wings concession at JPJ? Financial Secretary, Kelton Flinn stated that in fact, we are. We took his word for it.
PACEM – Many of the Knights
and their families provided care for the homeless by providing coffee and
Danish at Holy Comforter prior to their being transported to one of the
parishes, Incarnation, First Baptist, etc. where they received a warm bed for
the night. This program ended on March 14th.
IMPACT – is composed of 28 congregations in the
Charlottesville area that are looking to provide dental care and affordable
housing for the area poor. Over 1900 activists met at UHALL on March 10th to persuade officials of Charlottesville and Albemarle County to fund
these worthy endeavors. It was a great success.
Financial Secretary Report – Kelton Flinn

Trustee One Year Report – Jim Morrisard
Trustee, Jim Morrisard, wanted to amend his motion to
change the amount of the donation to the youth of Incarnation for their trip to
Washington from $500.00 to $1200.00. His rationale was that the youth worked
for that money by helping the Knights man the Wild Wings concession at JPJ. The
Chancellor seconded the motion. See Motion 2 on Page 5. -

EXCERPTS FROM THE MEETING MINUTES
These notes were excerpted
from the March 17th meeting minutes.
For the third month in a row, there were not enough
members in attendance to constitute a quorum. So no business could be
finalized. But, the District Deputy pointed out that business items could be
discussed and relayed to the council members through the “Newsletter” so they
could be voted on at the next valid meeting.
Because of this continued lack of a quorum, the
Deputy Grand Knight suggested that our Council #3670 should pursue merging with
St. Thomas Aquinas Council #11324 in
order to provide more attendance at meetings, and a greater pool of resources
for manning Fridays After Five and the Wild Wings concession at JPJ. Trustee John Kost stated two reasons why this
was not possible: 1). The State Deputy wants each Parish to have its own K of C
Council, and 2). St. Thomas’s Council is a “College Council” which is preferred
by both State and Supreme councils. The DGK then opined that because of a lack
of priests, a merge of parishes might happen in the future precipitating a
merge in councils. However, the DD reiterated that the Rules and Regulations
prevent us from merging with a “College Council”. The Warden pointed out that
when we ask for volunteers to staff FAF and JPJ Wild Wings concession we do get
enough people to effectively provide the required services, and earn the money
for our charitable works. But our visitor, Ed Griffin from Council #11475
remarked that if members don’t come to
the meetings, we can’t provide our charities with needed funds since we don’t
have a quorum to conduct business.
The
“Our Lady of Charity” ICON will arrive at our parish on April 12 from St. Peter
& Paul Council #11475. Then we are supposed to deliver the ICON to St.
Thomas Aquinas Council #11324 on April 16. The DGK asked the DD what provisions
are being made to expedite the exchange. The DD will coordinate the transfer
through e-mail with the respective Grand Knights, or their representative.
1. At the February 18th
meeting, DGK John Chiumento requested
$500 for the youth group to support their trip to Washington D.C. A
motion to provide the funding was requested by Trustee Jim Morrisard and seconded by the Chancellor, but it could
not be voted on by the Council because a quorum was not present.
2. At
the March 17th meeting, Trustee, Jim Morrisard, wanted to amend his
motion to change the amount of the donation to the youth of Incarnation for
their trip to Washington from $500.00 to $1200.00. His rationale was that the
youth worked for that money by helping the Knights man the Wild Wings
concession at JPJ. The
Chancellor seconded the motion. During
the discussion, the Warden opposed the motion since the Washington trip is only
one function at Incarnation. Others include support for the trip to the
Catholic Youth Conference, normally $500;
and support for the First
Communion Class with their request. This year they require about $390.00 for
memorabilia.
The Warden thinks that $500.00 is the correct
donation for the Washington trip.
3. DGK John Chiumento made a motion to provide the Church of the Incarnation $390.29 for Photo frames to be given as memento to the First Communion class. The motion was seconded by the Warden. The motion will be voted upon at the next valid business meeting.
The following proposals were presented to the council by Tom O’Rourke at the January 21st meeting. As far as the Editor knows, none of the proposals were moved to a motion and seconded. We should be able to get this done at the next meeting.
1. It has been proposed that instead of the Warden leading the Rosary before the meeting, 5 members of the council be chosen each to lead one decade of the Rosary.
2. It has been proposed that the council establish a kit of 5 Rosary beads and 5 cards on how to say the Rosary, for use at funerals. A Certificate of Condolence should also be made available. The Grand Knight or His Designee shall administer the presentation.
3. It has been proposed that council
establish a kitty of Rosary beads for use by members prior to the meeting. To
encourage carrying your own beads, a fee of 25 cents should be levied for their
use. The money garnered should be used to purchase more. The Inside Guard should administer this
program.
Peake:
Honoring Commitment to Newest Combat Veterans
WASHINGTON
– Military veterans who served in combat since Nov. 11, 1998, including
veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan, are now eligible for five years of free
medical care for most conditions from the Department of Veterans Affairs
(VA). This measure increases a two-year
limit that has been in effect nearly a decade.
“By
their service and their sacrifice, America’s newest combat veterans have earned
this special eligibility period for VA’s world-class health care,” said
Secretary of Veterans Affairs Dr. James B. Peake.
The
five-year deadline has no effect upon veterans with medical conditions related
to their military service. Veterans may
apply at any time after their discharge from the military -- even decades later
-- for medical care for service-connected health problems.
The new
provision, part of the National Defense Authorization Act of 2008 signed by
President Bush on Jan. 28, 2008, applies to care in a VA hospital, outpatient
clinic or nursing home. It also extends
VA dental benefits -- previously limited to 90 days after discharge for most
veterans -- to 180 days.
Combat
veterans who were discharged between Nov. 11, 1998 and Jan. 16, 2003, and who
never took advantage of VA’s health care system, have until Jan. 27, 2011 to
qualify for free VA health care.
The
five-year window is also open to activated Reservists and members of the
National Guard, if they served in a theater of combat operations after Nov. 11,
1998 and were discharged under other than dishonorable conditions.
Veterans
who take advantage of this five-year window to receive VA health care can
continue to receive care after five years, although they may have to pay
co-payments for medical problems unrelated to their military service. Co-payments range from $8 for a 30-day
supply of prescription medicine to $1,024 for the first 90 days of inpatient
care each year.
